How to Create Student Wellbeing-Focused ELICOS Curriculum
Firstly, let me explain what I mean by a Wellbeing-Focused ELICOS curriculum and why it is important to implement it in your curriculum.
A Wellbeing-Focused ELICOS curriculum is a curriculum that embeds wellbeing-focused learning outcomes. So that students are engaged in the personal development topics such as how to overcome challenges, discover your purpose, or identify your strengths, while studying English.
Personal growth can bring many benefits, including increased self-awareness, better relationships, improved mental and physical health, and greater career success. It can also lead to a greater sense of purpose and fulfilment.
Considering international students are consistently identified as being vulnerable to developing mental health and wellbeing issues (Australian Strategy for International Student Education 2021-2030, P18), I believe a Wellbeing-Focused ELICOS curriculum is not an option, but an essential element to be included to help reduce their homesickness, culture shock and other challenges they may face due to language barriers. Furthermore, providing opportunities for students to learn skills towards improving their well-being is vital.
